Introduction to a Physician Assistant

Hi everyone!

My name is Avani Patel, and I am a sophomore. I am majoring in Biology with the hopes of becoming a Physician Assistant. I choose Biology as my major especially because of its versatility and because of my interest in the sciences. With Biology, I am able to learn the traditional side of the science, and the major itself is incredibly rigorous as it entails complex material and courses. Becoming a Physician Assistant is my goal, but I am still hesitant and unsure. As you can see, I am indecisive. Although this is the case, I am a very diligent student once I set my mind to something. This last year I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA and obtain junior standing!

In my free time, I love watching movies and sleeping! Netflix is something I am always on. My favorite shows right now are Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. This summer, I was able to do both - watch movies and sleep! My family and I also went to Texas, Arkansas, and Barcelona this summer. Usually, my family and I are busy or someone is taking a summer class. So this summer, we were finally able to travel! We attended weddings in Texas and Arkansas, and they were both Indian weddings. Being an Indian, the wedding ceremonies were amazing and incredibly beautiful. My family and I went to Barcelona with all of my mom's side of the family. It was hectic, but fun! The architecture was detailed, beautiful, and had a gothic style. Here are some pictures of the places we visited in Barcelona.

Another thing that I love is food! I am vegetarian as well. Since I am a Indian, it helps with being a vegetarian! I love Thai, Italian, American, Indian, and Mexican foods. My favorite drink is Pepsi, even though it contains 41 grams of sugar!

These are a few things about me! I am nervous and excited for the Fall semester to begin. Hopefully, this course goes by smoothly. I hope to learn more about Myth-folklore through this class and have fun while learning about it!

  1. Oh wow, Barcelona: that sounds marvelous, Avani! And Indian weddings: that is a great experience to have on any continent. India is part of this class too, of course, since it represents one of the great mythological traditions of the world. Maybe you will want to do an India-related project for this class... there are some great myths related to medicine, like Hanuman fetched the Sanjivani herb, or the way the divine physician Dhanwantari was created during the Churning of the Ocean. And in the spirit of Indian music, I will share a link to a music video by my favorite Indian musical duo, Maati Baani: they made an ad for Pepsi! It is so cute; here is the video: Crash The Pepsi IPL Commercial - Maati Baani... the power of Pepsi! :-)

  2. Hey Avani! Barcelona sounds like an absolute dream; I am so jealous you got to go there, and I have now added that to my list of places I want to visit. Any time I think of Barcelona I instantly think of the Cheetah Girls movie! Congrats on achieving that 4.0 and junior standing, that is an incredible accomplishment, especially with your work load. Funny story, I happened to binge-watch the whole Grey's anatomy this summer in my free time; I know what you're thinking, "how did you have that much time?". Well, I found myself being so interested in the show that I started to just play it throughout my day during whatever I was doing: laying out by the pool, working out, getting ready for dinners, etc. It will always be one of my most favorite shows, I hope you are enjoying it as much as I did!

  3. Hi Avani,

Not like my opinion is worth much here, but I’ve always thought that the PA route sounded appealing: one can work in medicine, help people, never lack a job, and avoid the expense and lunacy of full medical school. (Plus I’ve heard that there’s a huge lack of personnel in the gap between nurses and highly specialized doctors and surgeons, full doctors and physician’s assistants both…)

Indian food is great — any places that meet your standard here in Norman?

    Best,
    A.M.

  4. Hi Avani!

We literally have the same interest which is sleeping and watching Netflix. May i say you have amazing taste in shows as Grey's Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder are my top two favorite shows! Shonda is killing the game! WOW I also love food too! I hope you have a wonderful semester in this class! I look forward to reading the stores you will write!

  5. Hi Avani!

It's nice to meet someone else that's 100% on board with the watching Netflix and sleeping agenda. I love watching Patriot Act too; it's a great way to stay up to date on major issues and Hasan never fails to entertain. I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy despite many of my friends wanting me to do so. Maybe this will push me into finally giving it a try! I'm glad you got to travel with family this summer. I definitely relate about someone in the family always being too busy to travel, so I'll live vicariously through you. I'm for sure jealous about the Indian weddings you got to attend! I haven't been to one in a while and I miss the hype atmosphere. I hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  6. Hey Avani,

Wow that is so impressive that you got a 4.00 keep it up my friend. I think it is always fascinating when I find someone who loves science because I am horrible at it. I think the last time I took a science class was senior year of high school. I still have to take one for college and I am so worried about it. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do with my family and I am trying to get them to agree to go to Italy once I graduate since that is where I am from. Barcelona, I have heard is absolutely breath taking and am super jealous that you went! I hope it was an amazing trip and you are able to take more in the future.

  7. Hello Avani! I hope your semester is going well so far!! Biology is such a cool topic! My dad has biology background and has taken masters level class for it and the subject really fascinates me. The 4.0 is amazing and I really hope you continue to pursue and achieve that with ease!! I am jealous of your trip to Barcelona as I have always wanted to go to Europe in some way, but I have not got the chance yet and I am really hoping a chance arises soon!

  8. Hi Avani! I think it's so cool that you went to Barcelona this summer! I actually plan on studying abroad in Barcelona next semester, and am even more excited now that I've read your post! And on the Indian weddings - I am also Indian and have been to my fair share of weddings. Each one is more beautiful than the last; I love the clothing and food and songs and everything about them. I hope your semester is going well and I look forward to reading your stories!

  9. Hi Avani I love that you said you were a vegetarian and that being Indian helps out with that. Lol that made me laugh in real life. One thing that I really appreciate about your introduction is how honest you are with your love of sleeping and watching netflix! Have you taken the Indian Epics course yet? I took that a few years ago and really enjoyed it! Perhaps you might enjoy it as well! Have fun this year!

  10. Hi, Avani! It’s nice to meet you! Congratulations on your 4.0 and junior standing, that’s awesome! If you have any pro tips for staying focused at OU, please let me know (ha ha). In all seriousness, I hope that you find the career that suits you best after college! Also, I’ve only seen Indian weddings in dramas, but the ceremonies are gorgeous and look like a lot of fun! I’m glad that you had a good time. Anyhow, I can’t wait to read your stories in Mythology and Folklore this semester!

  11. Hey Avani! It's so nice to meet you! I think it is awesome that you got a 4.0 last semester even though you are indecisive about what you want to do. It really shows how hard you work. I also know that a majority of my friends and I have been indesisve all throughout our years here. It is so much pressure to be able to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. It is awesome that you had the opputunity to travel with your family this summer. Good luck on your semester!

  12. Hello!

What made you chose PA? I had a friend who just recently this semester graduated from OU's PA school. Have you watched "Mindhunter" on netflix? It's a sort of docuseries about the FBI and how they first began studying serial killers. I am currently hooked on it and watch it whenever I get a break from school. Congratulations on your 4.0! That's a great achievement!

I hope the rest of you school year is just as successful! Best of luck!

  13. Hey there Avani! I really enjoyed reading about you, thanks for sharing a little of who you are! I think it is great that you were able to go to Barcelona, as it is such a beautiful place. My family is Spanish, and I have many relatives in Barcelona currently. I hope you enjoyed some of the food and festivities, as there seems to always be something going on in the city.

Also, Grey's Anatomy is definitely my favorite show of all time, so it is nice to see someone else's love for it as well. Congrats on such a strong junior year, and good luck for the rest of the semester!

  14. Hi Avani!

I was Pre-Physician Assistant for a semester but changed when I realized I couldn't handle all of the science. I applaud you for going after that! I'm also super indecisive, but I've learned you just have to try things out and be okay with the possibility that you might change your mind. Even if you ending up changing your mind about your career path or major, at least you'll have a ton of useful scientific knowledge that you can apply in tons of other fields. Good luck, and I look forward to reading your stories!

  15. Hi Avani!

I am also a biology major, so I totally get where you're coming from with the rigorous courses! Being a biology major is so rewarding though and will help so much if you are wanting to be a Physician Assistant! Also, congrats on the 4.0! That's not easy to do and you should be so proud! It sounds like you had a great summer with your family. The pictures from Barcelona look beautiful! I can't wait to read more of your stories!

  16. Hi Avani!

I'm also super indecisive. For instance, I still have no clue what I'm doing after I graduate. But I enjoyed reading your interest with your major. And congratulations on the 4.0! That's awesome! I, LOVE, How to Get Away with Murder! It is probably the best show ever written, and I'm so sad that this is their last season. I bet it was so much to go to Barcelona. I've never traveled outside the U.S., but I'd love to visit Barcelona or maybe Paris.

  17. Hi Avani! I am literally the most indecisive person I know so I completely understand. I am a senior and have no idea what I am doing after graduation. I was actually considering PA school, but it didn't seem like a good fit for me. Maybe I will change my mind, but who knows. I hope all goes well with school and you keep that 4.0. Boomer!

  18. Hi Avani,

That's amazing that you've been able to accomplish so much traveling just over a summer! The pictures you posted of the locations in Spain were so beautiful. Also, congratulations on keeping a 4.0 with such a difficult major. That's awesome you're able to apply yourself so well to your studies! Also, with the school related accomplishments, being considered a junior in credits despite being a sophomore is amazing! Good luck on your studies this semester.

  19. Hi Avani! It sounds like you had a lot of fun in Barcelona! It is a beautiful city. Though the news from Catalonia right now is pretty depressing. I'm glad to see people like you work their hardest in school even when they don't have a picture clear plan yet int heir mind. It shows a lot about your work ethnic. I know I'm only able to work hard because of my specific goals, so I'm impressed by you.

  20. Hi Avani,
One of the places on my Travel list is Barcelona! It's okay to be indecisive now and even in the future. I think that it is ridiculous to expect people to have the same career for your entire working life. I know I definitely won't! Your GPA is impressive, especially being a Junior. I had at least one B by the time I made it to Junior Year.
It was lovely to meet you.

  21. Hey Avani!
It was so great getting to read your introduction! You did an awesome job of including a lot of fun, interesting details about yourself and your summer! I spend a lot of time in Arkansas, it is one of my favorite places in the world. I also really love Thai food; I just ate some curry for dinner tonight! I can't wait to read your blogs!

  22. Hi Avani,

Congrats on maintaining a 4.0! That's pretty hard to do. I would agree that Biology is rigorous. I failed the course a long time ago back in my community college days. What else are you thinking about doing besides becoming a Physician Assistant? It sounds like you and your family travel a lot! Barcelona sounds like a lot of fun and those pictures are beautiful! Anyway good luck this semester!

  23. Hello Avani,
That is a rigorous path for a Major! I have heard other people doing something a bit different. They would take something else they are passionate in like English and take the Pre Requisites for the program. That way it isn’t as strenuous. I thought about going that path as well but chem wasn’t for me….I am so happy you had such a good GPA it must have been a struggle, but you pulled it off!! Where else would you like to travel?
